Moving to Sanford, FL: Historic Downtown, Lakefront Living and Moving Tips

Sanford mixes a historic downtown on Lake Monroe with fast-growing new neighborhoods. Here is what to know before you move, from a mover right next door in Lake Mary.

Furniture wrapped in moving pads and plastic, protected for a move

Sanford is one of Central Florida's most interesting places to live. It is the county seat of Seminole County, it sits on the south shore of Lake Monroe along the St. Johns River, and its historic downtown has brick streets, restored buildings and a food and brewery scene that keeps growing.

We are based right next door in Lake Mary, so we move families in and out of Sanford all the time. Here is what we have learned.

What people love about Sanford

  • Historic downtown: brick streets, local restaurants, breweries and shops, plus regular street festivals and events.
  • The Riverwalk: a long waterfront path along Lake Monroe for walking, running and biking, with sunset views over the water.
  • Getting around: a SunRail station for trips toward Orlando, plus Orlando Sanford International Airport right in town.
  • Family outings: the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens and plenty of parks and boat ramps.
  • A range of homes: from historic houses near downtown to newer neighborhoods and apartment communities west of town.

Moving into a historic Sanford home

Many homes near downtown were built long ago, and they were not designed with modern sectionals and king-size beds in mind. Expect some of these:

  • Narrow doors and tight staircases. Measure your largest pieces and the doorways before moving day.
  • Original wood floors. Worth protecting; floor and doorway protection is included in our hourly rate.
  • Street parking. Many older homes have no driveway, so plan where the truck will park.
  • Porches and steps. A few extra steps at the front door add up over a full day of trips.

Measure the tricky pieces

Measure the height, width and depth of your sofa, fridge and bed, then the narrowest door and stair turn in the new home. If something is close, tell us ahead of time so we bring the right tools and plan the route.

Moving into newer neighborhoods and apartments

Newer communities around Sanford are easier for trucks, but they have their own rules. HOAs often limit moving hours and where a truck can park, and apartment communities may require you to reserve a loading area or elevator. Call the office a week ahead and ask what they need from you and your mover, so there is no delay on moving day.
