Today, November 30, is the last day of the Atlantic hurricane season. For anyone who has been waiting out the storms before planning a move, this is the green light.
Winter is the most comfortable time of year to move in Central Florida. Here is why, and how to plan around the few things that make it different.
Why winter is the sweet spot
- Dry season. Central Florida's dry season runs through late fall, winter and spring. Far fewer afternoon thunderstorms means fewer weather delays.
- Lower humidity. Your furniture, boxes and the crew stay drier and cooler, and cardboard does not go soft.
- Cooler temperatures. Loading a truck in 70 degrees is a completely different day from loading it in 95.
- No storm watching. You can book a date without checking the tropics every morning.

What to plan around in winter
Shorter days. The sun sets around 5:30 p.m. in December. Book a morning start so the heavy lifting happens in daylight, and make sure the porch and driveway lights work at both homes.
The holiday calendar. Weekends in December fill up quickly, and the weeks around Christmas and New Year's are busy for everyone. Weekday moves are easier to book and usually go faster with less traffic.
End-of-month lease turnover. The last and first days of every month are the busiest days for apartment moves. If your lease allows it, moving a few days early or late can make booking easier.
Busier roads. Winter brings seasonal visitors and holiday travelers, so I-4 and the roads around the parks and airports get crowded. Plan your route and give yourself extra time between homes.
The cold-morning surprises
Central Florida does get the occasional cold snap. A few things to keep in mind on a chilly moving morning:
- Houseplants: tropical plants do not like cold. Move them in your car, not in the truck.
- Electronics: let TVs and computers warm up to room temperature before you turn them on.
- Dew and frost: morning dew makes ramps, driveways and grass slippery. Put down mats at the doors.
